Kenney of Gymnastics Named GEC Gymnast of the Week
Kenney placed third in the all-around (39.000) in a tri-meet versus the UNH and LIU.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Following the Purple Knights' first competition of the season on Sunday, sophomore Abigail Kenney has been named the Gymnastics East Conference (GEC) Gymnast of the Week. Kenney placed third in the all-around (39.000) in a tri-meet versus the University of New Hampshire and Long Island University.
"Last weekend's results are a true testament to the amount of work that Abby put in during the offseason and preseason," said head coach Lorraine Galow. "Not only did she work hard to upgrade skills on three events, but she also spent time focusing on building her confidence by working on the mental aspect of her gymnastics. This is just the beginning for Abby, and we are so excited to see her impact the rest of this season!"
The balance beam served as the top event for Kenney against UNH and LIU. The New Jersey native posted a fifth-place score of 9.800. She finished fifth in floor exercise as well with a mark of 9.775.
Kenney's afternoon also included impressive scores in both the bars (9.750) and the vault (9.675) as she started her season with terrific momentum.
The Purple Knights' team total of 192.80 last Sunday marked the highest score in a season-opening meet since 2016.
Bridgeport will return to action this Sunday (Jan. 21) for a dual meet at Cornell.
