Purple Knights Take First Place At Three-Team Brown Women's Gymnastics Invitational
UB Totals 194.475 Team Points To Grab Top Team Honors On The Day
Providence, R.I.-The University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team turned in a strong performance on Saturday, as the Purple Knights posted an impressive team score of 194.475, in only their second meet of the season, to take first place at the three-team Brown University Invitational. The University of New Hampshire finished in second place on the day with 193.375 team points, and host Brown University, making its 2017 season debut, took third place on the day with a score of 192.475. Last Saturday, UB opened its 2017 season with a score of 191.225 for a third place at a quad meet hosted by Rutgers University which was won by New Hampshire, as the Wildcats posted a team score of 193.425.
As a team, the Purple Knights won two of the four team events on Saturday taking first place on the vault (48.625) and in the floor exercise (49.025). On the bars, Bridgeport earned a 19team score of 48.275, and UB tallied a 48.550 on the balance beam.
In individual events, UB had first place finishers in three of four events.
On the vault, three Purple Knights finished in a tie for first place with a score of 9.775. Sharing the top spot in the vault were seniors Kimberly Stewart (Eastham, Mass.) and Hope Tralli (Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y.) plus freshman Nina Whittaker (Salem, N.H.).
On the bars, senior Christine Liautaud (Cary, Illinois) took top honors with score of 9.800.
For the second straight week, senior Brianna Comport (Gilbertsville, Pa.) won the floor exercise competition, this week turning in a stellar 9.925 score. Classmate Randi Cutolo (S. Jordan, Utah) grabbed second place in the floor exercise with a score of 9.900.
Comport was the Purple Knights top finisher on the beam, as she tied for fourth place with a score of 9.800.
In the all-around competition, UB junior Kelsey Campbell (Las Vegas, Nev.) took second place on the day with a score of 38.675 in the four events.
The University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team will be back in action on Friday evening, January 27 when the Purple Knights return to Providence for a dual meet with Brown. The following day, UB will wrap up a busy weekend of action taking part in a quad meet at Yale University.
