UB Women Drop ECC Hoops Tilt At St. Thomas Aquinas On Friday Night
Purple Knights Back In Action At Home On Sunday Versus Mercy
Sparkill, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team could not overcome a slow start, as they trailed 43-23 at the half, and the host St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans tuned 19 UB turnovers into 20 points, as the host team posted a 64-49 East Coast Conference victory on Friday night. The Purple Knights are now 3-7 overall and 0-3 in the ECC. STAC moves to 2-9 overall and an even 1-1 in conference action.
The Purple Knights came out firing in the second half, as the outscored the Spartans, 19-5, in the third quarter to cut the deficit to only six points, 48-42, heading into the final frame, but UB went cold from the floor again to open the fourth quarter, as they went scoreless for over four minutes to start the final 10 minutes of play.
Graduate student Janiece Loney (Herndon, Va.) and sophomore Brianna Meekins (Bridgeport, Conn.) led the Purple Knights in scoring with 14 points on the night. Meekins finished with a double-double as she tied with junior Stephanie McBride (Brooklyn, N.Y.) grabbing a team and game-high 12 rebounds. McBride also blocked four shots on the night.
Samirah Henderson (Grad., Rahway, N.J.) rounded out the Bridgeport players in double-digit scoring on Friday with 10 points, and she finished just shy of a double-double with nine boards.
Alexa Huertas and Sarah Ericson led St. Thomas Aquinas, as they each netted 14 points.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team returns to Hubbell Gym, as the Purple Knights will host Mercy College in an ECC contest on Sunday afternoon. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
