Purple Knights Start Off Hot But Fall At Preseason ECC Women's Basketball Favorite Daemen On Sunday Afternoon
Samirah Henderson Leads The Purple Knights With 29 Points
Amherst, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team got off to a hot start leading the host Daemen College Wildcats, 20-10, 5:11 into the first quarter, but the Daemen came back to post a high-scoring, 97-83, East Coast Conference win over the Purple Knights. UB is now 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the ECC. The Wildcats move to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
Graduate student Samirah Henderson (Rahway, N.J.) led UB with 29 points on the day, as she hit 10-of-18 field goals, including going 7-of-10 from behind the three-point arc. Henderson also dished off six assists in the game.
Samirah was joined in double figures in the scoring department by four teammates, as sophomore Brianna Meekins (Bridgeport, Conn.) had 17 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, Janiece Loney (Grad., Herndon, Va.) netted 11 points plus had eight assists and three steals plus Emily Brown (Grad., Haledon, N.J.) and junior Stephanie McBride (Brooklyn, N.Y) each scored 10 points for the Purple Knights.
Daemen was led by Katie Titus, who scored a career-high 38 points and finished with a double-double pulling down 11 boards.
The host Wildcats, who have now won 26 straight conference games on their home floor, finished the game with a huge advantage from the foul line hitting 25-of-29 free throws; versus UB, who connected on 8-of-10 attempts from the charity stripe.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team closes out its four-game road trip on Friday night with an ECC contest versus St. Thomas Aquinas College. Game time in Sparkill, N.Y. is set for 5:30 p.m.
