Purple Knights Come Back From 15 Down To Earn First Women's Hoops Win Of The Season At Bloomfield, 70-66
Four Purple Knights Reach Double-Digit Scoring In The Victory
Bloomfield, N.J.-Trailing by as many as 15 points, 35-20 with 4:40 to play in the second quarter, the University of Bridgeport women's basketball team came storming back to post a 70-66 non-conference win over the host Bloomfield College Bears in the Garden Sate on Wednesday night. With the victory, the Purple Knights are now 1-2 on the young 2021-22 season. Bloomfield remains winless at 0-3. The strong comeback also gives UB head women's basketball coach, Mike West, his first victory on the Bridgeport bench.
The Purple Knights outscored the Bears, 29-16, in the fourth quarter to earn the win, as sophomore Brianna Meekins (Bridgeport, Conn.) hit two free throws with 1:27 remaining on the clock to stake UB a 66-64 lead which they relinquished. Meekins went 10-of-14 from the charity stripe on the night, and she finished with a double-double scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Graduate student Janiece Loney (Herndon, Va.) and junior Stephanie McBride (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Bridgeport offense on Wednesday, as they each netted a game-high 18 points. McBride also had a strong game of defense blocking three shots and pulling down a team-high 11 boards for a double-double.
Emily Brown (Grad., Haledon, N.J.) rounded out the UB quartet in double-digit scoring with 11 points in the win.
Bloomfield's DaShanique Ruffin led her team with 16 points.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team wraps up its four-game road trip to open the season next Tuesday evening, November 23, when the Purple Knights travel up Route 8 to Waterbury, Connecticut to face Post University. Tip-time is set for 5:30 p.m.
