Torrid Finish Lifts Women's Basketball To 74-63 Win At AIC
UB Closes The Game On A 40-12 Run To Snap Three-Game Losing Skid
Springfield, Mass.-It was a tail of two halves in the Birthplace of Basketball on a snowy Saturday afternoon, as the University of Bridgeport women's basketball team overcome a red-hot start by the host American International College Yellow Jackets in the opening game of the AIC Holiday Classic with an impressive second half comeback to post a 74-63 non-conference victory. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for UB, as the Purple Knights are now 8-4 overall. The loss stops a six-game AIC winning streak, as the Yellow Jackets are now 9-4 on the season.
American International opened the game red-hot hitting 10 of its first 11 field goals, as the AIC lead 21-13 after the first quarter and 41-25 at the half.
The host squad increased its advantage to 19 points, 46-27, early in the third quarter and led 51-34 with 3:55 to play in that quarter, but from then on, it was all Purple Knights, as UB closed out the final 13:55 of play on a torrid 40-12 run to grab the victory.
Senior Camera Miley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was simply outstanding in helping her team to the comeback win netting a team-high 23 points, dishing out seven assists, making five steals and grabbing three rebounds.
Miley was joined in double figures by junior Aurelie Leblanc-Florent (Longueuil, Quebec, Canada) with 15 points, graduate student Anastasia Williams (Central Islip, N.Y.) with 12 points plus senior Aaliyah Mercer (Bronx, N.Y.) contributed 10 points. Williams also added seven rebounds for the winners.
Sophomore Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) led Bridgeport on the glass with nine rebounds, and she also chipped in six points, three blocked shots and three assists.
AIC's Dana Watts led all scorers and rebounders on the day with a double-double of 25 points and 11 rebounds.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team will close out play in the AIC Holiday Classic on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. with a game against the Golden Knights of the College of St. Rose.
