Purple Knights Nipped By # 14 Franklin Pierce, 73-67, In Women's Basketball's 2010-11 Home Opener
Kelly Keil Records A Double-Double With 26 Points And 11 Boards
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team gave the fourteenth-ranked Franklin Pierce Ravens all they could handle in UB's 2010-11 home opener on Sunday afternoon, as the Purple Knights battle to the end before losing, 73-67. With the loss, Bridgeport is now 1-3 on the season. Franklin Pierces remains undefeated with the win at 4-0.
Senior Kelly Keil (Sparta, N.J.) had an outstanding afternoon for Bridgeport leading all scorers in the game with 26 points and notching a double-double, as she also grabbed 11 rebounds. Keil also blocked two shots and had two steals for the Purple Knights.
Kelly was joined in double-figure scoring by junior Edna Marant (Philadelphia, Pa.) with 15 points, and senior Elinor Avny (Raanaana, Israel) who scored 10 points.
Sophomore guard Elsebeth Birman (Silver Spring, Md.) dished out 12 assists in the loss.
Franklin Pierce was led by Jewel White who scored 20 points and had a game-high 14 rebounds.
The real difference in Sunday's game came at the foul line where the Ravens hit 17-of-22 free throws; while Bridgeport was only 4-of-6 from the line.
The UB women will next be in action on Wednesday, December 1st when they open East Coast Conference play at Dowling College.
