Softball's Run In CACC Championship Tournament Ends With A Tough 5-4 Loss To Wilmington (Del.) University
Gabby Simms And Madison D'Amato Each Drive In A Pair Of Runs On Friday
Lakewood, N.J.-The fourth-seeded University of Bridgeport softball team saw its quest for the 2023 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Softball Championship Tournament title come to end on Friday afternoon as for the second straight day UB fell to the top-seeded Wilmington (Del.) University Wildcats dropping a 5-4 decision in a must-win game for both teams. With the loss, the Purple Knights are 30-23, and Wilmington moves on in the tournament needing to beat third-seeded Georgian Court University twice on Saturday with a 37-13 mark.
Trailing 2-0 on Friday, Bridgeport tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the third and grabbed a 4-2 advantage with two runs in the fifth, but the Wildcats came back to scored one unearned run in the bottom of the fifth and won the game in walk-off fashion with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Gabby Simms (Grad., Phoenixville, Pa.) led the Purple Knights offense with two hits and two runs batted in on Friday, and sophomore Madison D'Amato (Warwick, R.I.) also had two RBI.
For the second straight day, sophomore Erin Lifrieri (Seymour, Conn.) was stellar out of the UB bullpen working five innings in which she allowed only two hits, two runs (one earned) with no walks and one strikeout.
