Orangeburg, N.Y.-To say the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader sweep by the visiting University of Bridgeport Purple Knights on Tuesday over the host Dominican University New York Chargers was a epic day for the UB offense is perhaps an understatement, as the visitors scored a total of 26 runs on a total of 46 hits and clubbed a total of seven home runs on the afternoon. Bridgeport won the opener, 10-1, as every UB starter had at least one hit, and then completed the sweep by racing out to a 16-2 lead after four innings and then holding on for a 16-14 victory.
With the two wins, Bridgeport is now 23-18 overall and 13-7 in conference play. The Chargers fall to 8-28 overall and are 4-12 in the CACC.
In the opener, the Purple Knights slammed a total of five home runs, as senior Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) and freshman Mya Jones (Milford, Del.) each blasted two, two-run homers and junior Angela Oros (Yuma, Az.) had a solo shot.
In game one, Jones went 4-for-5 with 4 runs batted in, and she followed that up by going 4-for-5 again in the nightcap with 2 RBI, so on the day Mya went 8-for-10 at the plate with six runs batted.
Senior Meg McFarland (Monroe, Conn.) and sophomore Kalea Faulk (Corning, N.Y.) hit home runs for Bridgeport in game two, and senior Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.), who earned the pitching victory in the nightcap, went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in to help her cause.
In the opener, freshman Vise Zarate (Cypress, Calif.) fired a complete game to earn win number 15 on the year.
Up next, the Purple Knights open an eight-game homestand on Thursday afternoon in Seaside Park with a non-conference doubleheader versus Pace University. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
