Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team upped its overall season record to 19-16 and moved to 9-5 in the CACC with a home conference doubleheader sweep over the Thomas Jefferson University Rams on Strikeout Cancer Day. UB took game one, 4-2, and then completed the sweep with a 12-4 run-rule triumph in the nightcap in six innings. With the two losses, the Rams are now 9-15 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
In game one, the Purple Knights led 4-0 heading into the seventh inning and held to take the 4-2 win after Jefferson scored twice and ended the game with the bases loaded.
Senior Meg McFarland (Monroe, Conn.) led a seven-hit UB attack in the opener with two hits, including a triple with an RBI.
Junior Hailey Kim (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore Madison D'Amato (Warwick, R.I.) also drove in runs in the game one win.
D'Amato led the Purple Knights in game two with three hits and one more RBI, as UB rallied for the win scoring three runs in the fourth, five runs in the fifth and ending the contest with two runs in the sixth.
Freshman Mya Jones (Milford, Del.) had three runs batted in on two hits in game two, and sophomore Kalea Faulk (Corning, N.Y.) had two hits and two RBI for the game two victors.
Gabby Simms (Grad., Phoenixville, Pa.), Taylor Yates (Sr., Elk Grove, Calif.), Hannah Kirk (Sr., Chino Hills, Calif.) plus Angela Oros (Jr., Yuma, Ariz.) also knocked in runs for Bridgeport in game two.
In the pitching circle, Vise Zarate (Fr., Cypress, Calif.) earned the wins in both game firing a complete game in the opener and winning game two in relief. Zarate is now 12-6 on the season.
Up next, the UB softball team hits the road for a CACC doubleheader at Georgian Court University on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch in New Jersey is set for 2:00 p.m.
