Springfield, Mass.-The University of Bridgeport softball team upped its overall season record to 13-12 so far in 2023 with a non-conference doubleheader road sweep over American International College (3-17) on Monday afternoon, as UB won game one, 17-5 in five innings, and completed the sweep with a 9-3 victory in game two.
In the opener, the Purple Knights exploded for 16 runs in the first three innings of play on their way to the run-rule triumph scoring 17 runs on 16 hits, as every UB starter had at least one base knock.
Sophomore Kalea Faulk (Corning, N.Y.), who fell just a double shy of the cycle in game one, went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in, and freshman Mya Jones (Milford, Del.) also was 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBI.
Senior Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.) had four runs batted in on two hits in the opener, plus senior Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) and junior Angela Oros (Yuma, Ariz.) each drove in a pair for the winners in the opener.
Vise Zarate (Fr., Cypress, Calif.), who earned her seventh win of the season in the pitching circle, also smashed her first collegiate home run in the opener to give UB two big flies in the game along with Faulk's homer.
In game two, AIC took a 2-0 lead scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, but UB quickly responded with six runs in the top of the fifth, as they tied the game on a two-RBI double by Samantha Schiebe, took the lead which they relinquished on a triple by senior Meg McFarland (Monroe, Conn.), who had two hits in game two, that scored two teammates and then RBIs from Angela Oros and Gabby Simms (Grad., Phoenixville, Pa.).
Schiebe, who also earned the win in the pitching circle to even her season record at 5-5 allowing only one earned run over seven innings of work, drove in three more runs with a bases-clearing double in the top of the seventh to give her five runs batted in in the nightcap, as she had three two-base hits.
Mya Jones stayed red-hot at the plate for the winners in game two adding three more hits to her season ledger.
Up next, the UB softball returns home and gets back in conference play with a Wednesday doubleheader in Seaside Park versus Bloomfield College. First pitch of game one is set for 2:30 p.m.
