Game 1
Southern N.H.
Bridgeport, Conn.-It was a happy Homecoming for the University of Bridgeport softball team on Thursday afternoon in Seaside Park, as the Purple Knights returned to the diamond for the first time since March 4 and opened their 2023 home schedule with a non-conference doubleheader sweep over the visiting Southern New Hampshire University Penmen, as UB blanked SNHU, 4-0, in the opener and completed the sweep with a 10-1 victory in the nightcap in five innings. With the sweep, UB is now 7-10 overall, and the Penmen fall to 3-8 on the season.
In game one, Mya Jones (Fr., Milford, Del.) drove in all four Purple Knights' runs highlighted by a two-run homer in the sixth inning after driving in pair on a third inning double.
Gabby Simms (Grad., Phoenixville, Pa.) and Missy Daigneault (Sr., Rensselear, N.Y.) also had two hits apiece for the winners in the opener.
In the circle, Vise Zarate (Fr., Cypress, Calif.) twirled her first college shutout, as she blanked the Penmen on five hits, as she notched five strikeouts and walked only two batters.
In game two, UB erupted for two five-run innings, scoring five in the first and five in the third, on its way to the run-rule triumph.
Highlighting the win in the nightcap was a pinch-hit grand slam home run in the third inning by junior Angela Oros (Yuma, Ariz.).
Junior Grace Derita (Middletwon, Conn.) had two hits and two RBI for the winners in game two, and senior Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.), who earned her second win of the year in the pitching circle, plus sophomore Madison D'Amato (Warwick, R.I.) also had two hits for Bridgeport to help wrap up the sweep.
Up next, the UB softball team opens its inaugural Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Saturday in Delaware versus Goldey-Beacom with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
