Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team picked up a non-conference home sweep over the American International College Yellow Jackets on Wednesday afternoon to move the Purple Knights' season record to 30-13 in 2022. UB won game one, 5-2, and completed the sweep with a 7-3 triumph in game two. AIC is 3-35 on the season.
In the opener, junior Kaite Burawski (Hartley, Del.) allowed a two-run homer in the top of the first, but blanked the Yellow Jackets from then on to pick up win number 20 of the season (20-5). Burawski has also now hurled 21 complete games in 2022. In her seven innings of work, she allowed six hits without issuing a walk and struck out eight batters. Her fourth strikeout in the game gave her an impressive career total of 500.
Junior Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) collected her 100th career hit in the opener, a two-RBI double to help pace the Bridgeport offense.
Senior Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) and freshman Madison D'Amato (Warwick, R.I.), each had two hits for the winners in game one, and Ramon plus junior Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.), each had one RBI for UB.
In the nightcap, Schiebe earned her sixth win of the year in the pitching circle firing a complete game, in which she allowed only four hits, three runs (all earned) with five strikeouts and only one base on balls.
As team in game two, the Purple Knights banged out 10 hits and benefited from nine walks issued by three AIC pitchers.
Taylor Yates and classmate Meg McFarland (Monroe, Conn.), each had two hits in the second game, and Yates and Kaira Ramon, each had two runs batted in.
Up next, the UB softball team will play a key East Coast Conference doubleheader against Mercy College on Friday afternoon. First pitch in Seaside Park is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
