Flushing, N. Y.-The University of Bridgeport softball team moved into double figures in the win column on Sunday afternoon by sweeping an East Coast Conference road doubleheader over Queens (N.Y.) College, as the Purple Knights won game one, 8-5, and completed the sweep with a 6-1 triumph in game two. UB is now 11-1 overall and in conference play. Queens falls to 2-10 both overall and in the ECC.
In game one, the Bridgeport offense banged out 11 hits led by senior Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.), who went 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run and two doubles, plus she scored three runs and drove in five.
Senior Elyssa Marmolejo (Rialto, Calif.) and sophomore Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) also chipped in two hits for the winners in the opener.
In the pitching circle, sophomore Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.) earned the win to raise her season record to 3-0, as she worked the first four innings of game one, allowing six hits, five runs (four earned) with two strikeouts and three walks. Classmate Kaite Burawski (Hartley, Del.) picked up her first save of the season working three, nearly perfect innings of relief, in which she allowed no hits or walks and fanned six batters. The only base runner she allowed came via an error.
In nightcap, the Purple Knights struck first scoring four runs in the top of the third inning and never looked back.
As a team, UB had nine hits in game two led by Samantha Schiebe and Taylor Yates, who each had two base knocks.
Freshman Grace Derita (Middletown, Conn.) blasted her second home run of the season in game two, a solo shot in the sixth inning.
Along with Derita, Kaira Ramon, sophomore Meg McFarland (Monroe, Conn.), plus freshman Hailey Kim (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Isabell Porcaro (Massapequa, N.Y.) has single runs batted in for the Purple Knights in the victory in the nightcap.
Senior Miranda Hillman (Placentia, Calif.) pitched a complete game, six-hitter to raise her season mark to 3-0 in game two. Hillman allowed just one run (earned) with three strikeouts and no walks on the afternoon.
The UB softball team will look to continue its hot start to the season on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., when the Purple Knights return to the diamond with a home East Coast Conference doubleheader versus Mercy College.
