Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team split a home East Coast Conference doubleheader with the visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans on Tuesday afternoon winning game one, 8-4, and falling in game two, 6-5. The Purple Knights are now 13-17 overall and 2-8 in conference play. STAC is now 9-19 overall and 4-6 in the ECC.
In the opener, UB rallied to win plating seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning keyed by a go-ahead, three-run homer by sophomore Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.). Luzzi went 2-for-3 in the opener with those three runs batted in.
Junior Kamryn Beach (Tampa, Fla.) had two hits and drove in a run in game one, and the Purple Knights also got RBIs from freshman Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) and senior Yalitza Rodriguez (Freeport, N.Y.).
Senior Amanda Staheli (Pecatonica, Ill.) picked up her team-leading seventh win of the season in the pitching circle working a complete game in which she allowed eight hits and fanned five and allowed two walks.
In the nightcap, Bridgeport got solo home runs from Allison Luzzi again and junior Cherlynn Townsend (Hurst, Texas) to hold a 2-1 lead heading into the sixth inning only to see the visiting Spartans score five time to take a 6-2 lead which they never relinquished.
In game two. Luzzi added three more hits, and Kamryn Beach, Kaira Ramon and Townsend, each added two base knocks.
Freshman Hope Lincoln (N. Providence, R.I.) drove in two run in the loss as a pinch hitter.
The UB softball team is right back in action on Wednesday when the Purple Knights will host a non-conference doubleheader with Southern Connecticut State. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
