Springfield, Mass-The University of Bridgeport softball team got back into the win column on Thursday afternoon, as UB pitching dominated the day allowing only one run in two games, as the Purple Knights swept a non-conference road doubleheader at American International College, winning game one, 9-1, and taking game two, 1-0. With the sweep, UB is now 11-8 overall. AIC slips to 3-11 on the season with the two losses.
In the opener, senior hurler Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) picked up her team-leading fifth victory of the season firing a complete game in which she struck out nine and allowed only one runs on four hits.
On offense in game one, UB scored two runs in the top of the first and never looked back. Freshman Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) had three hits.
Senior Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) knocked in three runs and had two hits for the Purple Knights in the opener, and freshman Samantha Sabor (Plainfield, Ill.) had a pair of base knocks and drove in two runs, and sophomore Janaya Young (Orange, Conn.) also added two runs batted in.
In the nightcap, senior Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) grabbed win number four of the season in the pitching circle, as she baffled AIC pitching a four hit complete game shutout in which she fanned three batters and walked only one.
Junior Yalitza Rodriguez (Freeport, N.Y.) drove in the lone run in game two in the top of the sixth innings, and sophomore Jenna DiLorenzo (Woodbridge, Conn.) scored that run, and she finished with two hits for the winners.
Up next, the UB softball team is scheduled to open East Coast Conference play with a 12 noon home doubleheader on Saturday versus Queens (N.Y.) College.
