Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team swept the visiting Lady Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday afternoon in Seaside Park, taking game one, 6-2, and finishing off the sweep with a 5-3 victory in the nightcap. The Purple Knights, who now have a three-game winning streak heading into tomorrow's scheduled doubleheader at Mercy College, are 10-20 overall and 4-10 in the East Coast Conference. STAC is also now 10-20 overall, and the Lady Spartans are 4-10 in the ECC.
In the opener, UB junior Kerri Agrela (Smithfield, R.I.) continued her hot hitting going three-for-three with 2 RBI and two runs scored. Argela blasted her first home run of the season in game one.
In the pitching circle in the first game, junior Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) pitched her seventh straight complete game to pick up the win to raise her season record to 4-7. Bua allowed eight hits, two runs (both earned) with five strike outs and three walks in going the distance.
In game two, senior Kaila Crandall (Little Rock, Calif.) led a 10-hit UB offensive attack with three hits. Senior Paige Owens (Berlin, Conn.) and junior Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.), each had a pair of hits for the winners in the nightcap.
Junior Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) who is also now 4-7 on the year was outstanding again in the pitching circle to complete the Bridgeport sweep working all seven inning in which she allowed only five hits, three runs (all earned) with eight strikeouts and only two walks.
