Clermont, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport softball team opened up its 2016 season in fine style on Thursday afternoon in Florida by sweeping two games defeating the College of St. Rose, 8-7, and the University of the Sciences, 6-3.
In the win over St. Rose, junior Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) had three hits and knocked in two runs. Freshman Kamryn Beach (Tampa, Fla.) had two hits and two RBI, and senior Brittney Maio (Guilford, Conn.) also had two hits for the winners.
Newcomer sophomore Amanda Staheli (Pecatonica, Ill.) picked up the win in relief in the pitching circle going 5.2 innings without allowing an earned run.
In the victory over USciences, freshman Jenna DiLorenzo (Woodbridge, Conn.) collected three hits, and Beach added two base knocks and senior Imane Alou Issa (Berchem, Belgium) drove in two runs to highlight a 10-hit Purple Knights' offensive attack.
Junior Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) fired a completed game in which she allowed seven hits and only two earned runs to take the win in her first start of 2016.
Up next, UB is slated to face Stonehill and Northwood of Michigan on day two of their Spring Trip to the Sunshine State.
