Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team swept a Senior Day doubleheader from the visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans on Saturday afternoon, winning game one, 6-1, and completing the sweep with a 9-5 victory in game two. UB is now 13-31 overall and 7-21 in the East Coast Conference. STAC slips to 11-30 overall and 5-23 in the ECC.
In the opener, senior Taylor Hendrickson (Binghamton, N.Y.) was masterful in the pitching circle, as she was just one out away from a no-hitter before the Lady Spartans got a base knock. Hendrickson finished the day going all seven innings in which she allowed only two hits, one earned run while striking out nine and allowing on one walk. Taylor is now 3-3 on the season.
On offense in the opener, seniors Katelyn Wall (Madison, Conn.) and Jessica Griesinger (Brewster, N.Y.) led the way. Wall blasted a two run homer, her sixth of the year, and Griesinger went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs.
In game two, sophomore Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) went 2-for-4 and drove in five runs. O'Leary crushed her fourth home run of the year, a three-run shot in the sixth inning. Seniors Sydney Phillips (Sebastopol, Calif.) had two hits and Jade Blair (West Deptford, N.J.) had one hit to help lead a 12-hit Purple Knights' attack.
Sophomore Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) work six innings to earn the win as the UB starter, allowing just one earned run in six innings.
The UB softball team is back in action on Sunday afternoon, as the Purple Knights travel to Philadelphia, Pa. for a doubleheader with Holy Family University.
