Purple Knights Split Two Games To Open 2014 Softball Season In Florida
UB Falls In Season Opener To Gannon, 5-3; Team Rebounds To Top St. Rose, 9-6, In Game Two
Claremont, Florida-The University of Bridgeport softball escaped the cold weather of the Nutmeg State to open the 2014 season in Florida on Friday, and the Purple Knights split two games to open the year falling in their opener to Gannon University, 5-3, and winning their second game of the day, 9-6, over the College of St. Rose.
Against Gannon, freshman Tara Faford (Grafton, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a double and one run batted. Junior Jade Blair (West Deptford, N.J.) also went 2-for-3 at the plate in UB's season opener. The win lifts Gannon's overall record 4-3.
Blair again starred at the plate in Bridgeport's win over St. Rose going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. Freshman Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) picked up the win against the Golden Knights (3-6) in her first collegiate start, as she did not allow an earned run. Senior Tiffany Irrera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) closed the game out to preserve the Purple Knights' first win of 2014, as she recorded the save.
The Bridgeport softball team is back in action in Florida on Saturday when the team faces Alderson-Broaddus at 10:00 a.m. and Southern Connecticut State University at 12 noon. UB is scheduled to play a total of 14 games during the trip to Florida over the next seven days.
