Offensive Explosion Helps Softball Earn ECC Split At Mercy
After Losing Game One, 4-2, UB Rebounds To Take Game Two, 11-3
Bridgeport, Conn.-For the third straight set of games, the University of Bridgeport softball team earned a split of an East Coast Conference doubleheader, as the Purple Knights lost game one at Mercy College, 4-2, but then erupted on offense to post a n 11-3 win in game two, in a contest that was halted after five innings. With the split, UB is now 14-25 overall and 7-17 in the ECC. Mercy is now 10-23 overall and 8-16 in conference action.
In the opener, junior Stephanie Pearce (Surrey, England) had two hits and drove in one run, and freshman Morgan Dunn (Cohoes, N.Y.) knocked in UB's other tally.
The Bridgeport offense got off to a quick start in game two scoring one run in the first inning and adding eight more in the second inning.
Senior Emma Wojcik (Warsaw, Poland) blasted a home run and had four RBI in the nightcap and Morgan Dunn added three hits three runs batted in and also struck a homer for UB in the win.
Freshman Abby Young (Salem, Conn.) also had two runs batted in for the Purple Knights in game two.
Junior Alitha Krolikowski (Bristol, Conn.) pitched a complete game, four-hitter in game two to earn her third win of 2012, as she is now 3-5 on the season.
The UB softball team is back in action on Tuesday afternoon, as they travel to C.W. Post for an ECC doubleheader that begins at 3:00 p.m.
