Queens Sweeps An ECC Softball Doubleheader From UB
Purple Knights Host ECC-Leading Molloy On Thursday Afternoon
Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport softball team fell in both of an East Coast Conference doubleheader at Queens (N.Y.) College on Tuesday afternoon. UB was blanked in game one, 5-0, and Queens completed the sweep with an 8-2 win in the nightcap. Bridgeport is now 11-16 overall and 4-8 in the ECC. QC is now 13-8 overall and 6-7 in conference action.
In the opener, freshman Jessica Griesinger (Brewster, N.Y.) and senior Emma Wojcik (Warsaw, Poland) each had two hits.
Sophomore Tiffany Irrera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pitched a complete game in which she struck out seven batters as she took the loss in game one. Irrera is now 8-5 on the season.
In game two, UB grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by freshman Sydney Phillips (Sebastopol, Calif.), but Queens rallied to score eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to grab a lead which they never relinquished.
Bridgeport plated a run in the top of the fifth on an error to make the final score, 8-2.
Junior catcher Stephanie Pearce (Surrey, England) had two hits to lead the Purple Knights' nine-hit attack in game two.
The UB softball team returns home to DeLuca Field in Stratford on Thursday afternoon when they host the conference-leading Molloy College Lions. Action begins at 3:00 p.m.
