Swim Teams Begin 2015-16 Seasons At Sonny Werblin Invitational Hosted By Rutgers
Purple Knights Take First Places In Both Men's And Women's 50 Frees And 400 Medley Relays
Piscataway, N.J.-The University of Bridgeport men's and women's swimming teams opened their 2015-16 seasons on Friday at the Sonny Werblin Invitational hosted by Rutgers University. No team scoring is being kept at the meet which will conclude on Saturday.
The Purple Knights took first place in both the men's and women's 50 Freestyle races, as junior Didac Matsuyama (Barcelona, Spain) won the men's event in a time 21.39, and junior Tatiana Shepel (Moscow, Russia) won the women's event in a time of 24.25. Also in the men's 50 Free, freshmen Wilmar Du Plessis (Bloemfontein, South Africa) tied for second place (21.88) and Juan David Mafla (Cali, Columbia) took fourth place (22.34). In the women's 50 free, freshman Nina Stegu (Ljublijana, Slovenia) grabbed fourth place (24.84) and sophomore Yekaterina Gakhokidze (Almaty, Kazakhstan) took sixth place (24.87).
Other outstanding individual men's performances were turned on Friday night by senior Ivan Capan (Zagreb, Croatia), who took second place in the 200 IM (1:56.07) and junior Ivan Sangines (Barcelona, Spain), who finished third in the 500 Free (4:37.30).
Other outstanding women's individual performances included sophomore Annagrazia Bonsanti (Caracas, Venezuela) taking fifth place in the 500 Free (5:08.81) and freshman Clara Mico Gonzalez (Madrid, Spain) taking seventh place in the 200 IM (2:15.16)
The Purple Knights also won both 400 Medley Relays on Friday, as the women turned in a time of 4:10.92, and the men took first place with a time of 3:29.59.
