Purple Knight Swimmers Continue To Shine At 2014 Metropolitan Conference Championship Meet

Piscataway, N.J.-The University of Bridgeport swim teams continued to shine on Saturday night at the 2014 Metropolitan Conference Championship Meet being held at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center on the campus of Rutgers University, as both squad held onto second place in the team standings and posted a total of seven events on day two of the three day competition.  The Purple Knights have now won a total of 15 events at this year's Metropolitan Conference Championship Meet.  The UB women have amassed a two-day total of 718 points and trail first place LIU Post (940 points).  Southern Connecticut State and the College of New Jersey are tied for third in the women's standings with 579 points.  The Bridgeport men have scored 815 points and are behind first place, the College of New Jersey (984 points).  Rowan is third on the men's side with 604 points.

Highlighting day two for the Purple Knights were the outstanding performances tuned on the women's side by Armony Dumur (Sr., Amiens, France) and the consistent excellence of men's team captain Oscar Pereiro (Sr., Arzua, Spain).  Dumur won the women's 100-Yard Butterfly in a lightning-fast time of 53.61 which is the top time in all of Division II women's swimming in that event so far this season, plus it is only .05 off the NCAA Record.  An NCAA automatic qualifying performance, Dumur's time is also a Metro Conference, Metro Championship, Pool and UB record.  Periero won his fourth consecutive Metropolitan Conference Championship title in the 100-Yard Backstroke in a time of 49.15.  Oscar will also attempt to win the same event for the fourth straight time at this year's NCAA Division II National Championship meet.

After winning the women's 200-Yard IM on Friday, Adeline Martin (Antibes, France) captured the 100-Yard Breaststroke in a time of 1:02.66 which is a conference, championship and UB record.

The Bridgeport men went one-two-three in the 100-Yard Breaststroke as Ruben Gimenez (Sr. Burgos, Spain) won the event in meet record time of 53.81, and he was followed by Vyacheslav Fattakhov (Sr., Almatt, Kazakhstan) in second (55.32) and Ivan Capan (So., Zagreb, Croatia) in third (55.86).

As they did on Friday, both UB teams got off to a fast start in the first relay event of the night, the 200-Yard Medley Relay, as the women turned in a UB record time and NCAA "B" cut performance to take second place by only .07 seconds in a time of 1:42.39.  Jaimy Lee Taskin (So., Noordeijkerhout, Holland), Adeline Martin, Armony Dumur and Tatiana Shepel (So., Moscow, Russia) made up the women's 200 Medley Relay team.  Martin's lead-off leg time of 1:49.18 was a record setting swim that is tied for the fatets in Division II so far in 2013-14.  In the men's 200-Yard Medley Relay, UB won the event in a time of 1:28.56 which is a meet record. Oscar Pereiro, Vyacheslav Fattakhov, Ivan Capan and Ruben Gimenez made up the men's 200 Medley Relay squad.

The Purple Knights closed out Saturday evening in fine style winning both 800-Yard Freestyle Relays in record-setting times.  For the women, Adeline Martin, Polina Melinikova (Fr., Moscow, Russia), Tatiana Shepel and Armony Dumur won the event in a time of 7:31.94.  For the men, Didac Matsuyama (So., Barcelona, Spain), Vladislav Paskas (Jr., Zrenjanin, Serbia), Alberto Alemany (So., Barcelona, Spain) and junior Ivan Sangines (Barcelona, Spain) captured the event with a swim of 6:40.76.

All of Bridgeport's winning time on Saturday were at least NCAA "B" cut times.

Other fine individual performances were turned in on Saturday by Didac Matsuyama in the men's 100-Yard Butterfly (Second Place, NCAA "B" cut time of 49.52), freshman Antonio Nunez (Oviedo, Spain) in the 400-Yard IM (Second Place-4:06.04), plus sophomore Claudia Esteban (Zaragoza, Spain) and freshman Shannan Bott (Hamburg, Germany) took second (4:37.42) and third (4:40.25) respectively in the women's 400-yard IM.
