Bridgeport Teams Finish Strong At 2013 Metropolitan Conference Swimming And Diving Championships
Men Finish Second-Women Take Fourth Place
Piscataway, N.J.-The University of Bridgeport men's and women's swimming teams wrapped up a successful weekend at the 2013 Metropolitan Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Sunday night. The UB men finished the three-day competition which was held at the Rutgers University Aquatic Center located in the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center in second place (the top Division II men's team) with 1083 points behind first place The College of New Jersey (1455 points). The Bridgeport women took fourth place with 884.5 points finishing behind first place LIU Post (1298 points), second place TCNJ (1021 points) and third place Southern Connecticut State (906 points).
The UB men took four more first place finishes on Sunday to give the Purple Knight men a total of 11 event wins at the 2013 Metro Championships.
Highlighting Sunday's first place finishes were the 400-yard Freestyle Relay team of junior Ruben Gimenez (Burgos, Spain), graduate student Krzysztof Wilk (Krakow, Poland), sophomore Vladislav Paskas (Zrenjanin, Serbia) and junior Oscar Pereiro (Arzua, Spain) turning in an NCAA "A" cut and record time of 2:57.88, and senior Vyacheslav Fattakhov (Almatt, Kazakhstan) blazing an NCAA "A" cut and record time of 1:59.41 in the 200-yard Breaststroke.
Oscar Pereiro, who was named the Male Swimmer of the Championships, led a Bridgeport one-two finish in the 100-yard Freestyle winning the event in a time of 45.39. Krzysztof Wilk was second in a time of 45.49.
Senior Artur Pietrzak (Lezno, Poland) grabbed the top spot in the 200-yard Butterfly in a time of 1:55.00.
The Bridgeport men went two-three in the 200-yard Backstroke as sophomore Matheus Lima (Santos, Brazil) (1:48.65) and sophomore Igor Vulesevic (Zrenjanin, Serbia) (1:52.08) turned in NCAA "B" Cut times.
Graduate student Davide Sitti (Castelnuovo Ramgone. Italy) took second in the 1650-yard Freestyle in a time of 16:08.13 (NCAA "B" Cut).
On the women's side, freshman Jaimy Lee Taskin (Noordwijkerhout, Holland) took third in the 200-yard Backstroke in a time of 2:04.67 (NCAA "B" Cut), and freshman Claudia Esteban (Zaragoza, Spain) was fourth in the same event in a time of 2:06.19.
Sophomore Alja Tavcar (Ljublijana, Slovenia) took second in the women's 100-yard Freestyle (57.81), and classmate Ilka Oberle (Schwanau, Germany) was third in the 200-yard Breaststroke in a time of 2:23.01.
