Swim Teams Each Move Up One Spot In Standings At 2013 Metro Championships
Men Move Into Second Place; Women Now Third Heading Into Final Day Of Action at Conference Championship
Piscataway, N.J.-Both the University of Bridgeport men's and women's swimming teams moved up one place in the team standings after Day Two 2013 Metropolitan Conference Swimming and Diving Championships taking place at the Rutgers University Aquatic Center located in the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center. The UB men sit in second place, and the Purple Knight women are in fourth place in the 19 team event. The Bridgeport men have amassed 661 points through Saturday. The College of New Jersey leads the men's standings with 931 points. LIU Post sits atop the women's standings with 914 points, as the Purple Knight women have a total of 653.5 points.
The UB men added four more first place finishes on Saturday to give the Purple Knight men a total of seven wins through two days of the three day event.
Junior Oscar Pereiro's (Arzua, Spain) first place finish in the 100-yard Backstroke highlighted Saturday's action, as he turned in an NCAA "A" cut time of 48.45. Sophomore Matheus Lima (Santos, Brazil) was second behind Pereiro with an NCAA "B" cut time of 49.72.
The Bridgeport men also finished one-two in two additional individual events on Saturday, as graduate student Krzysztof Wilk (Krakow, Poland) won the 200-yard Freestyle (1:39.00), and sophomore Vladislav Paskas (Zrenjanin, Serbia) was second (1:40.39), plus in the 100-yard Breststroke, junior Ruben Gimenez (Burgos, Spain) took first (54.94) and senior Vyacheslav Fattakhov (Almatt, Kazakhstan) was second (55.58).
The men's 200-yard Medley Relay of Pereiro, Gimenez, Artur Pietrzak (Sr., Lezno, Poland) and Wilk grabbed first place in a time of 1:29,23.
On the women's side, both the 200-yard Medley Relay (1:45.60) and the 800-yard Freestyle Relay (7:39.71) took second places.
In individual events, sophomore Alina Sotnikova (Riga, Latvia) took second place in the 100-yard Backstroke in a time of 57.19 (NCAA "B" Cut).
In the women's 100-yard Butterfly, sophomore Elena Shchekleina (Yekaterinburg, Russia) finished in third place with a time of 56.47.
The UB women were also strong in the 400-yard IM as freshman Claudia Esteban (Zaragoza, Spain) took third (4:37.05) and freshman Jaimy Lee Taskin (Noordwijkerhout, Holland) was fourth (4:37.76).
