Men's Swimming Earns All-American Honors In Three More Events At 2012 NCAA National Championship
Purple Knights Sit In Ninth Place After Day Two Of Four-Day Meet
Mansfield, Texas-The University of Bridgeport men's swimming team continues to impress through two days of the 2012 NCAA Division II National Championship being hosted by Henderson State University in Mansfield, Texas at the Mansfield I.S.D. Natatorium.
The Purple Knights opened action on Thursday night by earning All-American honors in the 200-yard Free Relay as the team of sophomore, team captain Oscar Pereiro (Arzua, Spain), Ruben Gimenez (So., Burgos, Spain), junior Krzysztof Wilk (Warsaw, Poland) and freshman Vladislav Paskas (Zrenjanin, Serbia) finished in fourth place with a time of 1:21.19.
Junior Ilkka Hanhineva (Pietarsaari, Finland) earned individual All-American honors in the 100-yard Butterfly finishing in eighth place in the championship final with a time of 48.68. Ilkka set a UB school record in the prelims of the event turning in a time of 48.60.
Bridgeport closed out Thursday's competition with an impressive All-American performance in the 400-yard Medley Relay as the team of Pereiro, Gimenez, Hanhineva and Parkas took second place behind Florida Southern in a school-record time of 3:13.39 which is faster than the previous NCAA Division II Record in the event (3:14.15) entering this year's national championship. Florida Southern won the event in an NCAA record time of 3:12.43. Oscar Pereiro's lead-off leg in the 100-yard backstroke in the 400 Medley Relay was a blazing 46.99 which is an NCAA Division II record. Also earning All-American honors as part of UB's 400-yard Medley Relay is freshman Matheus Lima (Santos, Brazil), who swam the freestyle leg in the morning session.
Another UB varsity record was turned in by junior Krzysztof Wilk (Warsaw, Poland) on Thursday, as he swam a time of 1:39.27 in the prelims of the 200-yard Freestyle.
As a team, UB sits in ninth place with a total of 132 points after day two at the NCAAs. Only 19 total points separate places nine through four in the men's team standings, and Drury leads the men's standings with 248 total points
