Oscar Pereiro Leads Purple Knights NCAA Qualifying Barrage with 100 Back “A” Cut As Number Eight Men Win; Women Drop First of the Season at The College of St. Rose
Men Top Golden Knights, 121-110; Women Fall 136-92
Troy, N.Y. – Sophomore Oscar Pereiro (Arzua, Spain), the 2010 NCAA Champion in the 100-yard Backstroke, made a statement that his crown will not be easily given up. In the dual meet between The University of Bridgeport Purple Knights and The College of St. Rose Golden Knights on Friday night at the RPI pool, Pereiro touched the pad in a country leading, NCAA "A" cut and impressive 48.81 in the 100-yard Backstroke leading off the UB 400-yard Medley Relay. Oscar's "A" cut is only the second in Division II this season so far, motivating himself and his teammates to put up another eight NCAA "B" cuts on the night.
Pereiro also posted wins in the 50-yard (20.88) and 100-yard (45.91) Freestyles, both NCAA "B" cuts. Joining him in multiple NCAA "B" marks were Women's Purple Knight Maria Trubitsyna (Moscow, Russia) who won the 1000-yard (10:23.10) and 500-yard (5:07.15) Freestyles; while sophomore Ruben Gimenez (Burgos, Spain) added cuts in winning the 200-yard Individual Medley (1:55.83) and a 100-yard Freestyle (46.74)relay lead off, freshmen Igor Vulesevic's (Zrenjanin, Serbia) in the 200-yard Backstroke (1:54.85) and Vladislav Paskas (Zrenjanin, Serbia) in the 200-yard Freestyle (1:43.74) added the final two events to the tally.
For the UB women, Mona Hagelstein (Hamburg, Germany) added to wins in the 200-yard Freestyle (1:59.56) and 200-yard Butterfly (2:14.96) as the team suffered its first loss of the 2011-12 season by a score of 136 – 92.
Gimenez was the other double winner on the men's side with a win in the 200-yard Breaststroke (2:08.58) as the Men had to win the last relay to escape with a 121-110 victory over the Golden Knights.
The UB men are now 3-0 and the women 2-1 in dual meets. Coming up next, both teams face a double away meet weekend on Friday, November 18 they travel to Assumption College , Worcester, Mass. for a dual meet (3:00 p.m.), and on Saturday, November 18 they are at the USMMA Invitational (11:00 a.m.) in Kings Point, N.Y.
