Hagelstein And Pereiro Top Field At 2011 UB Swimming Pentathlon
Seven of 10 Records Broken In Precursor To Season
October 22, 2011
Bridgeport, Conn. -Sophomore Oscar Pereiro (Arzua, Spain), the 2011 NCAA Division II 100-yard Backstroke Champion picked up right where he left of last March, winning the Bridgeport men's swimming Pentathlon against a tough field of newcomers at the Wheeler Recreation Center Natatorium. In the women's meet, it was a reverse scenario with rookie "butterfly specialist" Mona Hagelstein (Hamburg, Germany), topping the women's final rankings.
The Pentathlon consists of swimming a 100-meter Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke & Freestyle and ending with a 200-meter Individual Medley. The swimmers get about 20 minutes rest between the swims. Individual event records are kept, however the Pentathlon Champion is the swimmer with the lowest cumulative time of all five events. A swimmer must post a legal time in all five events to be eligible to be the Pentathlon Champion.
Oscar finished in a Pentathlon record time of 6:07.35, besting fellow NCAA D II Champion (100-yard Breaststroke '10 & '11) Piotr Safronczyk's (UB '11) record of 6:12.68 set last year. Mona tallied a final time of 7:18.85, finishing less than 2 seconds ahead of Sophomore Ilka Oberle (7:20.71).
