Men's Basketball Survives Wilmington (Del.), 72-71
Malcolm Moye Hits Game-Winning Hoop With 22 Seconds To Play
Bridgeport, Conn.-A driving layup by senior Malcolm Moye (Windsor, Conn.) with 22 seconds to play in the game gave the University of Bridgeport men's basketball team a 72-71 lead and proved to be the final points in the contest, as UB posted a New Year's Eve Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win surviving the visiting Wilmington (Del.) University Wildcats on Saturday afternoon in Hubbell Gym.
Bridgeport is now 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the CACC. Wilmington is now 7-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
UB led the game, 34-24 at the half and upped its advantage to 15, 39-24, just 51 seconds into the second half, but Wilmington, who outscored the hosts, 47-38, in the second half, stormed back to take a seven-point lead, 61-54, with 6:05 to play before the Purple Knights rallied for the victory.
After Moye's basket, Wilmington called a timeout but turned the ball over with three seconds to play, and UB held on for the win.
Second chance points were also a big factor in UB's triumph on Saturday, as the Purple Knights had a total of 20 offensive rebounds in the game and scored a total of 22 points on those second chances.
Bridgeport outrebounded Wilmington by 10, 48-38, on the afternoon.
Along with his game-winning hoop, Malcolm Moye led the Purple Knights with 19 points, and contributed on both ends of the court grabbing seven rebounds, blocking four shots and making one steal.
Malcolm was joined in double figures by junior D'Andre Collins (Newark, N.J.) with 14 points, and senior Ali Sumareh (Bronx, N.Y.) had a double-double on the day with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior Mason Williams (Voorhees, N.J.) fell just shy of his own double-double nine points and 11 boards for the winners.
Wilmington's Taalib Holloman led all scorers in the contest with 26 points.
Up next, the UB men's basketball team will open the 2023 portion of its season schedule at Caldwell University on Wednesday, January 4. Game time in New Jersey is set for 7:30 p.m.
