Muhammed Ahmed's Putback Basket With 2.6 Seconds To Play Lifts UB Men To 84-82 Win Over Stonehill
Ahmed Finished With 25 Points And Nine Rebounds on the Night
Bridgeport, Conn.-A put-back basket and free throw by senior Muhammed Ahmed (Bronx, N.Y.) with 2.6 seconds left to play in the game lifted the University of Bridgeport men's basketball team to an exciting, 84-82, non-conference win over the visiting Stonehill College Skyhawks on Wednesday night in UB's Hubbell Gym. The victory is the Purple Knights' fourth in a row, as the team has evened its overall record 5-5 on the season. Stonehill is now 9-3 on the season.
Wednesday's game was a back-and forth contest featuring eight ties and 14 lead changes. Stonehill had taken an 82-81 lead with 25 seconds to play when points guard Carter Smith hit a twisting layup. Smith finished with a double-double of 14 points and 10 assists in the game. With Stonehill leading by that single point, UB's Montana Mayfield (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa.) fired up a three-point shot with six seconds to play that Ahmed, who finished with a game-high 25 points, rebounded put home to give the Purple Knights the lead and the win.
Four other Bridgeport players reached double figures on Wednesday to join Ahmed in double digits, as senior Jesse Jones (Irvington, N.J.) had 13 points, senior Eddie Asamoah (Calgary, Canada) had 12 points and seniors Devon Elliott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Ernest Rouse (Freeport, N.Y.), each netted 11 points.
Muhammed Ahmed also led Bridgeport on the glass, as he fell just shy of a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds.
Pierce Cumpstone led Stonehill with 20 points on the night; all of which came in the first half.
The UB men's basketball team returns to action on Sunday, January 3, when the Purple Knights travel to Manchester, New Hampshire to face St. Anselm College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
