Purple Knights Will Be Either One Or Two Seed In Next Weekend's ECC Championship Tournament
Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport men's basketball team completed its 2014-15 regular season schedule on a high note on Saturday afternoon, as the Purple Knights defeated the host Queens (N.Y.) College Knights, 98-70, and claimed a share of the regular season East Coast Conference title with St. Thomas Aquinas. UB is now an impressive 22-6 overall and completes its ECC schedule at 17-3. The Purple Knights head into the ECC Championship on a seven-game winning streak and winners of nine of their last 10 outings. Queens wraps up its 2014-15 season at 6-21 overall and 6-14 in the ECC.
Bridgeport will be the number two seed on the 2015 ECC Championship Tournament and play at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday, March 7 at LIU Post versus an opponent to be determined by Wednesday's play-in game featuring the number three and number six seeded teams. St. Thomas Aquinas and UB split their two games this season, but the Spartans grabbed the top seed in the ECC Tournament by sweeping the third place Daemen College Wildcats. The Purple Knights split with the Wildcats this year.
Saturday's UB victory was highlighted by the outstanding play of junior Jesse Jones (Irvington, N.J.) who had a career-best day scoring 30 points in just 16 minutes of action off the Bridgeport bench, as he connected on 9-of12 three-point shots and went 3-for-4 from the foul line. As a team, the Purple Knights scalded the nets from behind the three-point arc at a 63.0 percent hitting 17-of-23 shots from distance.
Jones was joined in double figures for the winners by junior Devon Elliott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 24 points, senior Willie Williams III (Norwalk, Conn.) netted 17 points and had eight rebounds and junior Ernest Rouse (Freeport, N.Y.) had a solid all-around game scoring 13 points, dishing off eight assists and making five steals.
Queens had five players reach double-digit scoring led by Kyhiem Chaplin and Diego Maldonado, who each had 15 points.
