Men's Hoops Sees Seven-Game Win Streak Come To An End As Host Daemen Rallies For 91-88 OT Victory
UB Now 9-4 Overall And 5-1 In The ECC
Amherst, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport men's basketball team saw its seven-game winning streak snapped and suffered its first East Coast Conference loss of the season, as the host Daemen College Wildcats came back several times to post a 91-88 overtime win on Saturday afternoon. The victory gives Daemen a 42-game home court winning streak. The Purple Knights now stand at 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the ECC. The Wildcats up their record to 10-3 overall and are 5-0 in conference play.
Bridgeport led by as many as 17 points in the first half (32-15) and held a 43-34 halftime advantage. UB led by as many as 12 points in the second half (49-37) and was up by eight points, 76-68, with 4:52 to play, but the Purple Knights were held scoreless in the last 3:30 of regulation, as the Wildcats closed regulation out on a 7-0 run to send the game into overtime tied 79-79.
In the overtime period, UB held an 87-83 lead with 2:01 to play; however Daemen would rally to take the lead, and a tying, three-point attempt by junior Ernest Rouse (Freeport, N.Y.) as time expired would not go as the host Wildcats would come away with the 91-88 victory.
Rouse led four Purple Knights in double-digit scoring with 24 points. Joining Ernest in double figures were Devon Elliott (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 18 points, Jesse Jones (Jr., Irvington, N,J.) with 15 points off the bench and senior Willie Williams III (Norwalk, Conn.) with 14 points.
Daemen's Gerald Beverly led all scorers and rebounders in the game with an impressive double-double netting 36 points and grabbing 15 boards.
The UB men's basketball team returns home for its next game when the Purple Knights will look to get back in the win column as they host the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds this Wednesday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m. in Hubbell Gym.
