Purple Knights Rally For First Men's Hoops Win Of 2014-15 With 70-69 Victory At AIC
Dominique Oneil Moorer Jr. Hits Game-Winning Free Throws
Springfield, Mass.-Senior Dominique Oneil Moorer Jr. (Queens, N.Y.) hit two free throws late in the second half to lift the University of Bridgeport men's basketball team to its first victory of the young 2014-14 campaign, as the Purple Knights came back from an 11-point halftime deficit to nip the host American International Yellowjackets, 70-69, in non-conference action on Wednesday night. UB is now 1-2 overall, and AIC suffers its first loss, as the Yellowjackets are now 2-1 on the season.
Trailing 37-26 at halftime, the Purple Knights came back to outscore their hosts 44-32 in the second stanza to pick up the win, as UB shot 53.6 percent from the floor in the second half (15-of-28), including gong 6-of-11 from three-point range.
With the game tied at 65-65, Bridgeport junior Eddie Asamoah (Calgary, Canada) gave his team a 68-65 lead at the 3:43 mark with a three-point play on a lay-up and a free throw. AIC would come back to grab a 69-68 lead with only 16 seconds to play when Marcus Porter, who led the Yellowjackets with 17 points hit a jump shot setting up Oneil Moorer Jr.'s winning free throws.
UB junior Bryce Elie (Queens, N.Y.) led all scored in the game with 21 points. Classmate Ernest Rouse (Freeport, N.Y.) also reached double-digit scoring for the winners with 12 points, and he grabbed a game-high six rebounds.
Junior Devon Elliott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior Naqwan Crowell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) also chipped in nine points for Bridgeport.
The UB men's basketball team is back in action at home on Saturday afternoon when they host the USciences Devils form Philadelphia, Pa. in a 1:00 p.m. game. Please not this is a new start time for Saturday's game.
