Pomona, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team earned a hard-fought Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference road doubleheader split on Thursday afternoon against the Dominican University New York Chargers to close out their three-game series, as the Purple Knights used timely hitting and a strong start from Jason Giambra (Milford, Conn.) to win game two, 3-2, after dropping the opener, 15-5, in seven innings. UB is now 9-36 overall and 5-18 in the CACC. Dominican moves to 13-32 overall and 9-14 in conference play.
In the game two win, the host Chargers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer. The visitors came back with a single run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Vin Mallon (Massapequa, N.Y.), and then UB took the lead for good in the fifth inning on an RBI-double by Mallon and a clutch RBI-single by Jake Woods (Jr., Stony Brook, N.Y.).
Junior Anthony Pascale (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and freshman Tyler Hodella (Miller Place, N.Y.) each had a pair for hits for Bridgeport in the game two win.
After allowing the first inning home run, Jason Giambra was outstanding notching a complete game victory in which he allowed eight hits and fanned six batters with just one walk.
In the opener, Jake Woods had two hits and drove in two runs, and Craig Leonard (Grad., Holtsville, N.Y.) and freshman James Ackerman (Smithtown, N.Y.) each had two hits and one RBI.
Up next, the UB baseball team is scheduled to close out its 2023 CACC schedule with a doubleheader at Goldey-Beacom on Sunday afternoon beginning at 12 noon in Delaware.
