Bridgeport, Conn.-A stellar start by Joe Nemchek (Grad., Trumbull, Conn.) in game two helped the University of Bridgeport baseball team earn a split of a home Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader against the visiting Chestnut Hill College Griffins on a cool and wind-swept Sunday afternoon in Seaside Park, as the Purple Knights won game two, 7-3, after falling in game one, 8-1. With the split, Bridgeport is now 7-20 overall and 3-7 in conference play. The win also snapped a six-game losing skid for UB. Chestnut Hill is now 11-15 overall and 5-3 in the CACC.
Nemchek was outstanding on the mound in the nightcap to earn his first win of 2023, as she limited the Griffins to only three hits over six innings of work in which he allowed only one unearned run, as she fanned seven batters and issued four walks.
Sophomore Vin Mallon (Massapequa, N.Y.) led a 13-hit Bridgeport offensive attack in game two going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.
Senior Shane McCone (Milford, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI in the game two win, and sophomores Christian Ortiz (Linden, N.J.) and Marcos Dominguez (Danbury, Conn.), each had two hits and an RBI in the victory.
Senior catcher Tyler Sharfetz (Fords, N.J.) also added a pair of base knocks in the nightcap for the Purple Knights.
In game one, Vin Mallon knocked in UB's lone run with a sixth inning solo homer; his second big fly of 2023.
Up next, the UB baseball team hits the road for a Wednesday afternoon conference doubleheader in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania when the Purple Knights will take on Thomas Jefferson University at 12 noon.
