Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team walked off the visiting Bears of Bloomfield College in both ends of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader in Seaside Park on Friday, as UB won game one, 4-3, and completed the sweep with a 7-6 victory in the ninth inning of a scheduled nine-inning contest. After taking the series two games to one over the Bears, the Purple Knights are now 6-14 overall and 2-1 in the CACC. Bloomfield is now 5-15 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
In game one, sophomore Vin Mallon (Massapequa, N.Y.), who had two hits in the contest, drove home Justin Leigh (Jr., Bridgeport, Conn.), who opened the bottom of ninth with base on balls and then advanced to third base on a bunt single by Craig Leonard (Grad., Holtsville, N.Y.), from third base with a solid single.
Leonard also had two hits in game one, as did freshman Tyler Hodella (Miller Place, N.Y.), as part of an 11-hit UB attack in game one.
Senior Tyler Solomon (Blue Point, N.Y.) picked up the win in the opener to move his season record to 2-0.
Freshman Brendan Palmer (Ansonia, Conn.) sis an excellent job as the UB started in game one allowing only two runs over seven innings of work in which he fanned seven batter without issuing a walk.
In the nightcap, senior Tyler Sharfetz (Fords, N.J.), who had three hits in game two, ended the extra inning affair with two-out single to left field that scored sophomore Jeremy Rodrigues (Monroe, Conn.) from second base after he opened the inning with a walk.
Craig Leonard added two more hits and two RBI in game two, and Vin Mallon tacked on two runs batted for the winners.
Freshman Tyler John (Stony Brook, N.Y.), the fourth Bridgeport pitcher in game two, earned the win to even his season mark at 1-1 with four sparking innings of relief in which he allowed no runs with seven strikeouts, allowing only one hit and one walk during his time on the mound.
Up next, the UB baseball team heads to Delaware on Sunday for a 12 noon CACC doubleheader against Wilmington (Del.) University.
