Bridgeport, Conn.-Sophomore Jeremy Rodrigues (Monroe, Conn.) launched a one-out, two-run, pinch hit home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the University of Bridgeport baseball team to 3-2 win over the visiting Assumption University Greyhounds in the second game of doubleheader on Saturday in Seaside Park. Rodrigues' heroics salvaged a split of the two game for UB, as Assumption won the opener on Saturday, 12-3. With the split, Bridgeport is now 4-13 overall. Assumption sees its record move to 5-11 so far in 2023.
After Assumption took a 2-1 lead scoring an unearned run in the top of the seventh, Bridgeport's Jake Woods (Jr., Stony Brook, N.Y.) set up the game-winning shot by Rodrigues leading off the bottom of the seventh with a solid single.
Freshman James Ackerman (Smithtown, N.Y.) was outstanding on the bump for UB in the nightcap earning his first college win, as she fired a completed game in which he scattered eight hits, allowed only one earned run with six strikeouts and only two walks.
In game one, Bridgeport took a 3-1 lead after two innings, but the visitors stormed back with three runs in the top of the third and added five more in the fifth on their way to the 12-3 win.
Seniors Shane McCone (Milford, Conn.) and Jacob Rich (Northwood, N.H.) each had two hits for the Purple Knights in the opener, and Rich, Tyler Hodella (Fr., Miller Place, N.Y.) and Jake Woods, each had an RBI for UB in game one.
Up next, the same two team will wrap up their three game series in Seaside Park with a 12 noon single game on Sunday.
