Newcomer Vin Mallon Homers For UB Against The Patriots
Florence, S.C.-After newcomer Vin Mallon (Massapequa, N.Y.) tied the game at 5-5 with a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning, the host Patriots of Francis Marion University responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning to post a 10-5 win over the visiting University of Bridgeport Purple Knights in a non-conference baseball game on Wednesday night in South Carolina. UB is 2-5 so far this season. Francis Marion evens its season mark at 8-8.
Mallon went 2-for-4 at the plate with his home run on Wednesday, and sophomore Michael Fletcher (Winter Park, Fla.) continued his strong play on the team's season-opening Southern Swing with a base hit and a run batted in.
Junior Justin Leigh (Bridgeport, Conn.) added a double for the Purple Knights at FMU.
After taking Thursday off, the UB baseball team will begin the final portion of its Spring Break trip returning to the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for a four-game series against local rival, the University of New Haven which will begin with a 10:00 a.m. single game on Friday, followed by a Saturday afternoon doubleheader and a single game on Sunday morning.
