Old Westbury, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team picked up a hard-earned road doubleheader split to salvage the final game of four-game East Coast Conference weekend series against the NYIT Bears on Sunday, as the Purple Knights took advantage of three Bears' errors in game two to pick up a 3-2 win after dropping game one, 11-6. With the split, Bridgeport is now 11-18 overall and 7-5 in the ECC. NYIT is now 20-6 overall and 10-2 in conference action.
After dropping the first three games of the series, Bridgeport trailed 2-1 heading into the top of the seventh inning of game two of Sunday's doubleheader before the Purple Knights railed to score single runs in the seventh and eighth to pick up the 3-2 victory.
In game two, junior Alex Rauso (Trumbull, Conn.) had UB's lone run batted and freshmen Ryan Donnelly (Fairfield, Conn.) and Cory Listing (West Sand Lake, N.Y.), each had two hits for the winners.
Junior Jonathan Brooks (Stratford, Conn.) earned the win in the nightcap to move his season record to 2-3, as he pitched three scoreless innings allowing only two hits with two strikeouts.
Game two starter, William Jackson (Jr., New Haven, Conn.) did fine job working six innings in which he allowed two runs, only one earned, on four hits, fanning five batters.
In the opener, Listing was a force at the plate hitting two home runs and driving in five runs.
Sophomore Conall Roberts (Mt. Laurel. N.J.) had three hits for Bridgeport in game one.
The UB baseball team is scheduled to be back in action at home on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play when they host the Adelphi University Panthers. Game time in Seaside Park is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
