St. Petersburg, Fla.-The host Eckerd College Tritons broke open a tight 2-1 game by scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on their way to a 6-2 non-conference win over the visiting University of Bridgeport baseball team. The Tritons are now 9-13 so far in 2017, and the Purple Knights slip to 2-5.
Senior Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) had two hits for UB, plus graduate student Chris Triano (Greenwich, Conn.) and senior Tyler Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.), each drove in a run for UB.
Starting pitcher Matt Van Riper (Elmwood Park, N.J.) worked six good innings for Bridgeport in which he allowed only two runs (both earned) on two hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
The same two teams will wrap up their two-game series at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday night.
