UB Has Now Won Four Games In A Row And Seven Of Its Last Eight Outings
Wilmington, Del.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team used pitching and defense to make a two-run top of the fourth inning standup, as the Purple Knights posted a 2-1 road, non-conference win over the host Wilmington (Del.) University Wildcats on Tuesday afternoon. Bridgeport has now won four games in a row, and UB has now been victorious in seven of its last eight outings, as the Purple Knights up their overall season mark to 13-8-1. Wilmington is now 6-14 overall.
Bridgeport scored its two runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout by sophomore Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.) and a Wilmington error. The Purple Knights played errorless baseball on Tuesday.
On the mound, UB starter Matt Van Riper (Jr., Elmwood Park, N.J.) worked 6.2 innings to earn his third win of 2016, as he scattered eight hits and allowed one run while striking out three and not issuing a base on balls.
Classmate Adam Thayer (Ansonia, Conn.) worked the final 2.1 innings of the game to pick up his first save of the season. During his time on the mound, Thayer did not allow a run and only gave up one hit with no walks and two strikeouts.
Bridgeport catcher Tyler Theiss (Soph., Deer Park, N.Y.) had a strong game on Tuesday throwing out two runners and smacking a double at the plate.
The Purple Knights will look to continue their winning ways on Wednesday afternoon at home, when they host the Bears of Bloomfield College in a non-conference tilt. Game time at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
