Freshman Jose Negron's Walk-off Single In Bottom Of The Ninth Lifts Baseball To 6-5 Win Over Molloy
Four-Game ECC Series Between The Lions And Purple Knights Will Continue With A Doubleheader On Long Island On Saturday
Bridgeport, Conn.-Freshman Jose Negron (New Haven, Conn.) smashed a walk-off single to leftfield with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to score sophomore Casey Ouellette (New Canaan, Conn.) from second base and give the host University of Bridgeport Purple Knights a 6-5 East Coast Conference win over the visiting Molloy College Lions. With one out, Ouellette reach first on a throwing error by the Molloy third baseman and then stole second base to set up Negron's heroics. Bridgeport is now 12-17 overall and 8-5 in conference play. Molloy is now 14-13 overall and 3-6 in the ECC.
Trailing 5-2 heading into the top of the sixth inning, Molloy scored two runs in the sixth and tied the game at 5-5 with a run in the top of the ninth on a two-out hit by Kevin Podell.
Freshman Kevin Johnson (Milford, Conn.) picked up the win in relief for UB working 0.2 of an inning. Johnson is now 1-2 on the season. Sean Gordon (2-1) took the loss in relief for the Lions.
Senior Brian O'Keefe (Milford, Conn.) started for Bridgeport and worked six inning in which he allowed nine hits, four runs (all earned)with nine strike outs and three walks.
Every player in the Purple Knights' line-up had one hit on the afternoon, and senior Tim Bickford (Wallingford, Conn.) had two runs batted in, and sophomore Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) had the team's other RBI.
The same two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday on Long Island.
