Brian O'Keefe Moves Atop UB Career Strikeout List As Baseball Tops Queens (N.Y.), 7-3
Senior Now Has 176 Career K's
Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-3 East Coast Conference road win over the host Queens (N.Y.) College Knights on a cold day in New York City on Saturday. In the game, senior left-handed pitcher Brian O'Keefe (Milford, Conn.) struck out nine batters to move into first place on UB's all-time career strikeout list with 176 surpassing the previous record of 172. O'Keefe picked up the win on Saturday to even his season record at 1-1, as he worked seven innings in which he allowed four hits, two runs (both earned) with those nine K's. With the win, UB is now 5-14 overall and 2-2 in the ECC. Queens slips to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Senior John Ascenzia (West Haven, Conn.) and sophomore Tyler Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.) each went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Purple Knights' 14-hit attack. Ascenzia also drove in two runs.
Casey McCone (So., Milford, Conn.), Dave Egeland (Jr., Toms River, N.J.) and freshman Tyler Theiss (Deer Park, NY) each had two hits for Bridgeport.
The same two teams will continue their four-game series at Queens tomorrow on Sunday at 12 noon with a doubleheader. UB will serve as the home team in both of the games.
