Baseball Team Snaps Losing Skid With 2-0 ECC Road Win Over Queens
Junior Brian O'Keefe Picks Up First Shutout Of 2014 And Dylan Steigerwald Drives In Both UB Runs
Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball picked up its first East Coast Conference win of 2014 and snapped a nine-game losing streak on a damp Friday afternoon in New York City with a 2-0 road win over the Queens (N.Y.) College Knights. UB is now 7-16 overall and 1-8 in conference play. QC falls to 6-7 overall and 1-4 in the ECC.
For his second straight start, junior Brian O'Keefe (Milford, Conn.) was dominant on the mound firing his second consecutive complete game in which he earned his first shutout of the season blanking the host Knights over his nine innings of work in which he allowed six hits; while striking out nine and walking only one. O'Keefe has now not allowed a run in his last 16.2 innings pitched. In his last two starts, Brian has pitched 18 innings in which he has allowed only one run on nine hits whiling fanning 20 batters and walking only three. Friday's win ups his season record to 2-4.
Freshman Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.), who had two hits on the afternoon, knocked in both UB runs with a one-out single in the top of the fifth inning.
The same two teams will continue their four-game weekend series on Saturday afternoon at West Haven High School, where the Purple Knights will host a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
