Baseball Runs Winning Streak To Six Games With Two Victories Over C.W. Post
Purple Knights Sweep Five-Game ECC Series From The Pioneers
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team ran its winning streak to six games and completed a five-game East Coast Conference series sweep over C.W. Post by defeating the Pioneers twice on Sunday. Playing as the home team in a nine-inning affair, the Purple Knights opened action on Sunday with a 10-3 win. In Sunday's second game, a seven-inning contest, Bridgeport played as the road team (Sunday's game two was a make-up for a game rained out earlier in the week that was to be played at C.W. Post) and topped CWP, 5-3. With the two wins, the Purple Knights are now 11-5 overall and 6-3 in conference play. C.W. Post falls to 3-23 overall and 2-7 in the ECC.
The Purple Knights used two big innings, a four-run fourth and a four-run fifth, to run away with the 10-3 win in Sunday's opener. Junior Matt Ranaudo (Milford, Conn.), who went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs in game one, capped off the four-run fifth inning with a three-run home run to right field.
Bridgeport also got two runs batted in from sophomore Ryan Barba (Stratford, Conn.) and freshman John Ascenzia (West Haven, Conn.) in game one.
Sophomore starter Chris Maull (Winslow, N.J.) worked 5.2 innings, in which he allowed two runs (only one earned) on six hits, to pick up the win and even his season record at 1-1. Maull also struck out six and walked only one during his time on the hill.
Junior Tom Wiacek (Bolton Landing, N.Y.) worked the final 3.1 innings of game one to notch his first save of the season. Wiacek allowed only two hits and an unearned run while striking out three and walking only one over his 3.1 innings pitched. Wiacek has now thrown 13.2 innings so far this season, and he has not allowed an earned run. Tom has allowed only six hits and struck out 13 batters during those 13.2 innings.
In game two, senior Peter Barrows (Old Saybrook, Conn.) led the Bridgeport offense by going 3-for-4 with one RBI. With the score tied 2-2 in the top of the fifth, Peter plated the go-ahead run for the Purple Knights with a double to right-center giving his team a 3-2 lead which they never relinquished.
Senior captain Gaetano Giunta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added two hits for the game two winners.
Junior Matt Bartolomei (Stratford, Conn.) was outstanding on the mound for Bridgeport in game two raising his season record to 2-1 with a complete game performance in which he allowed only six hits and one earned run. Matt did not allow a base on balls and fanned four C.W. Post batters in his seven-inning performance.
The UB baseball team is next scheduled to be in action on Tuesday afternoon when they host Post University in a non-conference contest. Game time at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard is set for 3:00 p.m.
