Springfield, Mass.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team got right back in the win column on Friday after the squad suffered its first loss of the 2019 campaign on Wednesday night, as the Purple Knights moved to 9-1 on the season with two victories at the International Volleyball Hall of Fame Classic hosted by American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts. In match one of the day, UB overcame a slow start to defeat Assumption College in four sets, 20-25, 25-20, 25-12, 25-18, and the Purple and White closed out the day with a sweep over Felician University, 25-19, 25-12, 29-27.
In the win over Assumption, senior Emily Burford (Albuquerque, N.M.) led the Bridgeport offense with 13 kills, and she was joined in double figures by classmate Morgan Knight (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), who finished with a double-double against the Greyhounds of 11 kills and 10 digs.
Sophomore Amanda Keller (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and senior Makayla Maroney (Parker, Colo.) each finished with a total of eight kills in Friday's opener, plus the duo was strong at the net on defense, as Makayla contributed three blocks and Amanda added a pair.
Sophomore setter Carly Killorin (Centennial, Colo.) directed the UB with 42 assists and added 15 digs.
Sophomore Breanna Jones (Littleton, Colo.) led the Bridgeport defense with 20 digs in the four sets against Assumption.
Versus Felician, Bridgeport breezed to wins in the opening two sets, but the Purple Knights had to comeback from a 20-13 deficit in the third set to grind out the 29-27 triumph.
Against the Golden Falcons, senior Amanda Hennemann (Nova Petropolis, Brazil) tallied a team-best 14 kills and added nine kills, and Morgan Knight closed out a fine Friday with nine more kills to help the winners on offense.
Carly Killorin picked up her seventh double-double of 2019 in Friday's finale 35 assists and 11 digs, plus she was spot on from behind the service line with six aces.
On the backline, junior Klein Johnson (San Antonio, Texas) led the UB defense with 18 digs, and senior Claire Anderson (Oak Harbor, Wash.) also reached double-digit digs with 14.
On Saturday, the UB volleyball team will wrap up action in Springfield with two more matches, as the Purple Knights face hosted AIC, the defending NCAA Division II East Region Champion, at 1:00 p.m. and a tilt with St. Anselm College at 5:00 p.m.
