Bridgeport Volleyball Claims 2012 ECC Regular Season Title With Sweep At Mercy
Purple Knights Will Now Host 2012 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament on November 16 And 17
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team claimed the 2012 East Coast Conference regular season title and won its ninth straight match with a 26-24, 25-21, 25-21 sweep of the host Mercy College Mavericks on Sunday afternoon. UB is now 21-4 overall and 13-1 in ECC action. Mercy slips to 3-26 overall and 0-15 in conference play. By virtue of winning the 2012 ECC regular season crown, the Purple Knights will now host the 2012 East Coast Conference Championship which will take place on Friday and Saturday, November 16 and 17 in Hubbell Gym. Bridgeport will be joined in the 2012 ECC Championship Tournament by NYIT, LIU Post and Dowling, and the winner of the championship receives an automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Division II Championship Tournament that will begin on November 29.
Sophomores Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) and Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) led UB with nine kills apiece. Savic also had eight assists, six digs, three service aces and one block assist. Shen added six digs, four service aces and two block assists plus hit a .500 percentage for the match.
Sophomore Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) hit an amazing .875 on the day with seven kills on eight attacks with no errors, plus she chipped in three block assists.
Senior libero Taylor McBeth (Langley, B.C., Canada) recorded a match-leading 11 digs for the winners and sophomore setter Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil) had 25 assists on the day.
The Bridgeport women's volleyball team is right back in action tomorrow, Monday, November 12 at Molloy College. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
