Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team battled back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the match at 2-2 with just over 12 minutes to play in regulation, but the top-seeded Purple Knights could not advance to Sunday's East Coast Championship Final, as the visiting and fourth-seed Molloy College Lions took the penalty kick shootout, 4-1, to move on to play New York Tech. The match is officially registered as a tie, so UB finishes 2019 with a 9-7-3 record. Molloy moves on to Sunday with a 13-4-2 mark.
The Lions led 1-0 at halftime, and scored a just 2:31 into the second half to grab a 2-0 advantage before the Purple Knights began to mount a comeback.
UB junior Andrea Basilicato (Guilford, Conn.) made the score 2-1 at the 51:01 mark of action when her long shot deflected past Molloy goalkeeper Jackie Carty.
Bridgeport tied things up at 2-2 with 12:27 to play in regulation when Roosa Ariyo (Sr., Espoo, Finland) put home a long through ball from classmate Maegen Doyle.
Unfortunately for Purple Knights fans, the Molloy keeper Carty was the true star of the match making a whopping nine saves, several of which were simply outstanding, plus she stopped UB's first two penalty kicks with saves to put her team in position to advance to the final.
On the night, Bridgeport outshot Molloy, 18-12.
