Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport Purple Knights and the Mercy College Mavericks battled to a hard-fought, 2-2 double overtime draw in East Coast Conference women's soccer action in the Park City on Saturday night. UB is now 7-5-2 overall and remains atop the ECC standings at 5-0-1 in conference play. Mercy is now 9-2-2 overall and 3-1-2 in the ECC.
The Maverick jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead just 3:50 into the match when Claudia McKail scored off a feed from Kaitlyn Denning.
The Purple Knights would tie the match at 1-1 just under 11 minutes later when senior Nara DaCosta (Pancas, Brazil) netted goal number five of 2019 off a beautiful long pass from classmate Valentina Florez (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.).
Bridgeport would take a 2-1 lead 3:55 into the second half when Jenna Denis (Sr., Ridgefield, Conn.) scored her first goal of the year off a scramble from a corner kick taking by Maegen Doyle (Harwich, England).
UB would hold that 2-1 lead until the 78th minute when Mercy's Natalia Elizarraras hammered home a long blast to the top corner of the net to knot the contest at 2-2.
The Purple Knights would have the a chance to win the match in both the final minute of regulation when Maegen Doyle would skim a shot off the cross bar, and late in the second overtime period, when junior Andrea Basilicato's (Guilford, Conn.) shot was stop on a fine save by Mercy keeper Melissa Torres, who made seven saves in the match.
UB outshot Mercy, 17-9, on the night.
Bridgeport freshman goalkeeper Helena Dahlstrom (Stockholm, Sweden) made two saves.
Up the next, the UB women's soccer team will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. on Wednesday afternoon to face Jefferson University in a non-conference match. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. in the City of Brotherly Love.
